How to Pray for Yourself

It is not only okay for you to pray for yourself, it is necessary for your new relationship with God to grow.

YOU SEE now that you are a part of the family of God, all of the promises in the Bible are available to you. But, just as you chose to receive Jesus as your Lord, you also need to choose blessings over curses (Deuteronomy 30:19). You didn’t give up your free will to choose how you want to live your life when you accepted Jesus as your Lord.

The Bible tells us in James 4:2 that “…ye have not, because ye ask not.”

Proverbs 18:21 says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” The words that you speak have the power to bring life and blessing or death and cursing into your life.

Jesus Himself said, “That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.”(Mark 11:23)

It is also very important for your spiritual growth that you say what God says in the Bible about you and not what the world says. You will have whatever you believe in your heart and say with your mouth about yourself whether it is good or bad.

“How do I ask God for the things He has promised me”, you ask? Jesus tells us plainly in John 16:23-24. “Verily, Verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you. …ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.”

We are given further instruction in 1 John 5:14-15. This is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.

So whatever you need in your life, find where God promises it to you in the Bible and then ask your Father for it “in Jesus’ name.” Then consider it done and wait for Him to bring it to pass. And don’t undo your prayers by speaking contrary to what you just asked for. If you asked God for financial provision, don’t walk around saying, “I’m broke” or “I don’t have enough to pay my bills”. remember; you will have whatever you say.

If you will pray the following scriptures for yourself (and your loved one, if you like) every day, you will open a door for God to come in and do awesome things in your life. Now these scriptures are just a good start. As you read your Bible, you’ll find more promises of God that you can add to your prayer time for yourself and others. And feel free to make these prayer personal. Put your name in them; and say “I”, “me”, “my”, etc.

Father, in the name of Jesus, as I pray and confess the following scriptures, I ask you to fulfill every promise in them in my life. As I confess your word, I believe I receive everything you say is mine. Your Word is final authority in my life.

Psalm 23

The Lord is my shepherd. I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures: he restoreth my soul; he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name sake. Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and they staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Psalm 91

Father show me how to dwell in the secret place of the Most High so that I shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I say of the Lord,

He is my refuge and my fortress; my God; in him will I trust. Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. A thousand shall fall at thy side, and thousand at thy right hand, but it shall not come nigh thee. Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked. Because thou has made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet. Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name. He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honor him. With long life will I satisfy him, and show him my salvation.

Psalm 103:1-18

Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with loving kindness and tender mercies; Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s. The Lord executeth righteousness and judgment for all that are oppressed. He made known his ways unto Moses, his acts unto the children of Israel. The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy. He will not always chide: neither will he keep his anger for ever. He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him. As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us. Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him. For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust. As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth. For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more. But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children’s children; To such as keep his covenant, and to those that remember his commandments to do them.

Isaiah 54:8-17

In a little wrath I hid my face from thee for a moment; but with everlasting kindness will I have mercy on thee, saith the Lord thy Redeemer. For this is as the waters of Noah unto me: for as I have sworn that the waters of Noah should no more go over the earth; so have I sworn that I would not be wroth with thee, nor rebuke thee. For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the Lord that hath mercy on thee. O thou afflicted, tossed with tempest, and not comforted, behold, I will lay thy stones with fair colors, and lay thy foundations with sapphires. And I will make thy windows of agates, and thy gates of carbuncles, and all thy borders of pleasant stones. And all thy children shall be taught of the Lord; and great shall be the peace of thy children. In righteousness shalt thou be established: thou shalt be far from oppression; for thou shalt not fear; and from terror; for it shall not come near thee. Behold, they shall surely gather together, but not by me; whosoever shall gather together against thee shall fall for thy sake. Behold, I have created the smith that bloweth the coals in the fire, and that bringeth forth an instrument for his work; and I have created the waster to destroy. No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is of me, saith the Lord.

The Holy Spirit inspired the Apostle Paul to pray the following verses for the church people of his day. They have been personalized for you.

Ephesians 1:17-23

Father, I ask that [you] the God of [my] Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto [me] the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him (Jesus): The eyes of [my] understanding being enlightened; that [I] may know what is the hope of [your] calling, and what (are) the riches of the glory of his (Jesus’) inheritance in the saints, And what is the exceeding greatness of [your] power to [me] who believe(s), according to the working of [your] mighty power, Which [you] wrought in Christ, when [you] raised him from the dead, and set him at [your] own right hand in the heavenly places, Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: And hath put all things under [Jesus and my] feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, Which is his body, the fullness of him that filleth all in all.

Ephesians 3:16-20

Father, grant me according to the riches of [your] glory, to be strengthened with might by [your] Spirit in [my] inner man; That Christ may dwell in [my] heart by faith; that [I], being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that [I] might be filled with all the fullness of God. You are able to do exceeding abundantly above all that [I] ask or think, according to the power that worketh in [me].

Colossians 1:9-11

I also ask that I might be filled with the knowledge of [your] will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; That [I] might walk worthy of [you] Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; Strengthened with all might, according to [your] glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness.

Philippians 1:9-11

Father, I pray that [my] love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, that [I] may approve the things that are excellent (and reject those that are not), that [I] may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to [your] glory and praise [Father] God.

1 Thessalonians 5:23

I also pray that you the very God of peace sanctify [me] wholly; and I pray [that my] whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of [my] Lord Jesus Christ.

Now Father God, I apply the blood of Jesus (who is the lamb of God) over myself, my family, my home, and everything else you have given me to be a steward of on your behalf. As the destroyer had to pass over the homes of the children of Israel who applied the blood of the lamb to their door posts (Exodus 12:1-30), I declare that because of the deliverance from evil that Jesus purchased for me when He shed His blood and died on the cross for my sins Satan must pass over me and all that is mine.

Father, I believe that I receive everything that your Son Jesus died to provide for me. I will prosper and be in health, even as my soul prospers. (3 John 2)

I thank you and praise you for all you have done for me. In Jesus name, I call it done.

Amen.
